Program:            Take your problem solving skills using A3’s to the next level!

Speaker:                      Cindy Jimmerson, Founder & President, Lean Healthcare West

Abstract:

Cindy will share her use of A3’s in solving problems during the project definition phase for a capital project at a hospital facility.  Examples of how owners and suppliers used A3’s to resolve issues impacting hospital department layout, area needed, etc. will be reviewed and results shared.  Cindy’s presentation is focused on 1. Orientation to A3 thinking 2. A3’s relationship to VSMs 3. Application to their work during the project definition phase for a capital project at a hospital facility 4. a couple of example A3’s )  Tips for successful A3’s for solving healthcare project definition problems will be shared.

A case study will show how a Lean Healthcare West client decreased the square footage of their lab remodel by 18% after using VSMs/A3s with their staff to redesign the remodel scope. (And the client loves their lab!).

a) A “Lightning Round" Report on lowlights and highlights of any Lean Assessments performed in April, your use of 5S, your site walk looking for waste. (1 minute max each person ).

3) Main Speaker and Topic:  Take your problem solving skills using A3’s to the next level!  Don’t miss the Nor. Cal Chapter of LCI meeting Wed. May 7th 6pm UCB: If Value Stream Maps (VSM) are considered a view of a process from 10,000 feet, an A3 Report offers a microscopic view of one specific problem identified on the Value Stream Map.  The A3 Report method is used for communicating problems on the Value Stream Map, as well as describing problems, or changes in the work between suppliers and customers and is a format for solving the problem that is objective and engages both the supplier and the customer

Prior to the Nor. Cal chapter of LCI meeting at 6PM, the UCB P2SL Healthcare Value Stream Mapping workshop will provide an update on the current research  from 8AM to 5PM.  Cindy’s presentation will be a great way to advance use of A3’s from problems uncovered in value stream maps and other problems in the life of a project.  To register for the 8AM to 5PM UCB P2SL program, go to   http://p2sl.berkeley.edu/events.htm

4) Questions for the speakers:  Be prepared with questions! Another Lightning Round (1 minute max each)

NorCal Lean Construction Institute

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly. Please contact nor-cal-support@leanconstruction.org for further assistance.
